Miami is warm all year, which makes it one of the easiest beach trips in the country, especially when the rest of the US is cold. But "warm" means very different things in January and in August, and prices, crowds and the risk of storms all change with the seasons.
Miami's two seasons
Miami has a tropical climate with two main seasons rather than four.
Dry season (November to April)
This is when most visitors come. Days are sunny and pleasantly warm, nights are mild, and rain is less frequent. The sea is still swimmable for many people in winter, although it is cooler than in summer. Cold fronts sometimes bring a few chilly days, so pack a light jacket for the evenings.
Wet season (May to October)
Summer is hot and humid, with short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms on many days. Mornings are often sunny, so plan beach time early and indoor activities for the afternoon. The ocean is at its warmest, and hotels drop their prices.
What to know about hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, and the most active period is usually August to October. Most days in those months are not affected by storms, but if a storm does approach, flights can be canceled and plans can change quickly.
If you travel in hurricane season:
- Book flexible or refundable hotels when you can.
- Consider travel insurance that covers weather disruptions, and read what it includes.
- Keep an eye on official forecasts in the days before your trip.
Miami month by month
- January: dry, sunny and mild. Peak season, with high prices and busy beaches.
- February: one of the most pleasant months. Popular for festivals and winter escapes, so book early.
- March: warm and dry, but this is spring break season and the month of big music events, so prices and crowds can spike, especially in Miami Beach.
- April: warm and still mostly dry. Prices ease after spring break, which makes late April a good value.
- May: heat and humidity rise and the rainy season begins toward the end of the month. Good deals before summer.
- June: hot, humid and stormy in the afternoons. Hurricane season starts on June 1.
- July: hot and wet, with summer family travel. Many hotels run summer offers.
- August: one of the hottest and most humid months, and the start of the most active storm period. Often among the cheapest times to visit.
- September: hot, humid and in the heart of hurricane season. Usually quiet and affordable.
- October: still warm, with storm risk early in the month. The weather often starts to improve by the end of the month.
- November: the dry season returns. Warm, less humid and less crowded than winter, outside Thanksgiving week.
- December: pleasant and festive. Prices rise toward the holidays, and the art world arrives for Art Basel Miami Beach in early December.
Best time to visit Miami for...
The beach
For calm, sunny beach days without extreme heat, November to May is ideal. If you love warm water and do not mind the heat or afternoon showers, June to September gives you the warmest ocean.
Lower prices
June to September is usually the cheapest time for hotels. In the dry season, late April, May and November (outside holiday weeks) often bring better deals than midwinter.
Fewer crowds
Late spring and fall are calmer than the winter peak. Summer is quieter for tourists but busier with families during school holidays.
Events
Miami's calendar is busiest in winter and early spring, with art fairs, food festivals, music events and sports. Dates change every year, so check event websites before you book, and expect higher hotel prices during the biggest weekends.
How long to stay in Miami
A long weekend of three or four days is enough for the beach, South Beach's Art Deco District, Wynwood and Little Havana. With five days or more you can add a day trip to the Everglades or drive down to the Florida Keys. The Overseas Highway to Key West is one of the most scenic drives in the country, and it is easy to turn into an overnight trip.
What to pack for each season
- Dry season: light summer clothes, swimwear and sunscreen, plus a light sweater or jacket for cool evenings and air-conditioned restaurants.
- Wet season: breathable clothes, a small umbrella or light rain jacket, and sandals that can handle a sudden downpour.
- Any time of year: sunglasses, a refillable water bottle and comfortable walking shoes. Many restaurants and clubs have dress codes in the evening, so bring at least one smarter outfit.
Miami vs. other Florida beach trips
If Miami's prices are too high for your dates, other Florida cities can be good alternatives. Fort Lauderdale is close by and usually calmer, Tampa and St. Petersburg have beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, and Orlando combines theme parks with easy beach day trips. Check flights to more than one Florida airport before you decide, because the cheapest airport can change from one week to the next. A flexible plan, with a day or two of wiggle room on either side, usually finds the best fare.
Getting to Miami for less
Miami International (MIA) is the main airport, but Fort Lauderdale (FLL), about 30 miles north, is worth checking too, as it is often served by budget airlines. Compare both when you search.

Tips for a Miami trip
- Pick your area. South Beach is lively and close to the sand, Mid-Beach and North Beach are calmer, and Brickell and Downtown are good for nightlife and the city. Compare neighborhoods on our Miami hotels map.
- Plan for parking. Parking in Miami Beach can be expensive and hard to find. If you stay near the beach you may not need a car every day. For day trips to the Everglades or the Florida Keys, a rental car makes sense.
- Respect the sun. Even in winter the sun is strong. Wear sunscreen, a hat and drink plenty of water.
- Go beyond the beach. Wynwood's murals, Little Havana's cafes, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and the Everglades are all close by. Browse our list of things to do in Miami.
- Add a second stop. Miami pairs well with the Keys, Orlando or a Caribbean island. For ideas, see our Orlando vacation on a budget guide.
