Cancun is one of the most popular international destinations for Americans, and it is easy to see why: white-sand beaches, turquoise water, Maya ruins and short nonstop flights from dozens of US cities. But the experience, and the price, change a lot through the year.
Cancun's seasons at a glance
- December to April (high season): dry, sunny and warm, with lower humidity. Prices peak around Christmas, New Year's and spring break (March), and the beaches are at their busiest.
- May to June: hotter and more humid, but still mostly sunny. Crowds thin out after spring break, and prices fall. Sargassum seaweed can start to arrive.
- July to August: hot, humid, with afternoon showers. Prices rise again as US and Mexican school holidays begin.
- September to October: the peak of hurricane season and the rainiest months. Usually the cheapest time of year, with the emptiest beaches.
- November: rain eases and temperatures are pleasant. A great shoulder month before winter prices kick in.
Cheapest time to go to Cancun
Flights and hotels are usually cheapest from late August through early November (outside of Thanksgiving) and in late April to early June, after spring break. If you have the flexibility, booking a week in early December, before the holiday rush, can also be good value.

Hurricane season in Cancun
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August to October. Most weeks pass without any storm, but if you travel then:
- Book hotels and tours with free cancellation.
- Consider travel insurance that covers weather.
- Keep an eye on the forecast in the week before you fly.
Seaweed (sargassum) season
In recent years, large amounts of sargassum seaweed have washed up on Caribbean beaches, usually from about spring through summer. How much arrives varies a lot from year to year and beach to beach. The beaches facing the calm lagoon side, Isla Mujeres and the west coast of Cozumel are often less affected. Check recent reports close to your trip.
How to save money in Cancun
Stay outside the Hotel Zone
The famous Hotel Zone is beautiful but pricey. Downtown Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos have plenty of good-value hotels. Compare prices on one map on our Cancun hotels page.
Book your airport transfer ahead
Taxis at Cancun airport can be expensive, and the arrivals hall is famous for pushy sales pitches. A pre-booked Kiwitaxi transfer has a fixed price and a driver waiting with your name.
Rent a car for day trips
The roads around Cancun and the Riviera Maya are good, and a car makes it easy to reach cenotes, Tulum and Chichen Itza on your own schedule. Compare rental companies on DiscoverCars or see our Cancun car rental page. Read the insurance terms carefully, as Mexican law requires local liability cover.
Book tours online
Chichen Itza, cenote swims, Isla Mujeres catamaran trips and Xcaret are the most popular day trips. Booking online in advance on Klook or our things to do in Cancun page is usually cheaper than from hotel tour desks.
Bottom line
For perfect weather, go December to April and book early. For the best value, go late April to May or in November. For the lowest prices, accept some rain and hurricane risk in September and October, and book everything with free cancellation.
Thinking about other beaches too? See Punta Cana, Los Cabos and Montego Bay.
